Comments Every time I thought the morning flight was over, I would look up to see 50 more mallards dropping from the clouds. Sitting 10 yards from me, my friend Mike would hunch down lower in the weeds, clutching his old Remington semiauto and reaching for his call. The gun pointed surely, an by 8: I had a limit of southbound mallards. Mike had his birds, too, and before we picked up decoys I showed him the new V3. The receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope for turkey or deer hunting, and its barrel has front and middle beads that are helpful for target shooting. The best part, though, is its price: A few days after the duck hunt I collected a limit of big Canada geese with the V3. I then turned my attention to the upland birds.

Remington recently announced something most of us thought would never happen: They changed the basic design of the Model and put a detachable box magazine on the most beloved shotgun since the Winchester Model The new version is called the DM detachable magazine. In these discussions, it became clear there was only one real opportunity to improve the pump shotgun as a defensive firearm.
Pump-action shotguns have limited capacity and can sometimes be slow to reload under stress when compared to other common defensive firearms used today. Cox went on to tell me Remington saw this as an opportunity to step out of the box and innovate to improve the pump-action shogun by offering a legitimate solution to this concern.

More than 40 years ago, the Model forever changed the way American shooters viewed autoloading shotguns. It was the first autoloader to combine the repeat-shot versatility of early-century models with the sleek, modern lines and handling qualities of revered double barrels. The Remington Model has been a field-proved favorite ever since.
In , Remington introduced the Model , a gas actuated semi-auto shotgun that ushered in a new era of shotguns with noticeable improvements not only in felt recoil but in its consistent cycling. In fact, in a Model LT was used to set a firearms record for most shells fired through a semi-auto shotgun without malfunctions or breakage of any kind — oh, and without being cleaned, either. That record was a rather stunning 24, rounds, and although other manufacturers have tried to break it, they have yet to succeed.
The featured what was then an innovative self-compensating gas system. High pressures within the barrel were relieved by excess gas being released through two little holes underneath the barrel and the way the gas cycled shells meant the recoil energy was dispersed over a longer stretch rather than occurring all at once. Companies like Benelli — which is located in Urbino, Italy — and Beretta — which is located in Brescia, Italy — have overtaken the shotgun market in staggering numbers.
And one of the companies to make a splash in the realm of shotguns made specifically for women, Syren Tempio, has its roots in Italy as well. Franchi, Perazzi, Caesar Guerini — Italian. The shotgun has become not just a foreign market but an Italian one; approximately eighty percent of shotguns being sold here in the States are foreign-made. The Versa Max was first introduced in , a full 23 years after the ; that quarter-century gap between shotgun innovations seems to be becoming a bit of a habit — until now.

I have lost count of the aftermarket stocks that I have used on s through the years to mitigate the punishing recoil of 1-ounce slugs and try to shorten the length of pull so it fits me while wearing body armor. I recently had the opportunity to round up some of what I feel are the best aftermarket stocks available and try them out on my terms, on my duty shotgun. The pistol grip is fat, and the backstrap is all rubber.

I’m hoping that the folks here might be able to help me with a couple of questions before I make the attempt. According to the Remington web page related to the Model Model , there are several grades of this shotgun. The Grade 1 has de-carbonized barrels — and I’m sure that’s not what mine has — but I’m not clear whether mine has “Fine twist barrels” Grade 2 or “Damascus steel barrels, engraving” Grade 3 since there’s no indication of what type of engraving or where it’s located.
I’ve seen pictures of another that was listed as a “Grade 3” and which looked identical to mine. The second question is what I should for ask it. Mine is in really nice condition — hardly a scratch on the stock, no external rust and only a small amount of pitting in the bores. All of the mechanisms work beautifully as well. Is this considered a “firearm” or an “antique” under the law? The law in my state Maryland says:
