Terminology[ edit ] The term “diploma mill” originally denotes an institution providing diplomas on an intensive and profit-making basis, like a factory. While the terms “degree mill” and “diploma mill” are commonly used interchangeably, within the academic community a distinction is sometimes drawn. Academic diplomas may be legitimately awarded without any study as a recognition of authority or experience. When given extraordinarily, such degrees are called honorary degrees or honoris causa degrees. Also, in some universities, holders of a lower degree such as a bachelor’s degree may be routinely awarded honorary higher degrees such as a master’s degree without study. The term “diploma mill” may also be used pejoratively to describe a legitimate institution with low academic admission standards and a low job placement rate, such as for-profit schools.
This post, originally published at Chief Justice Roberts announces majority opinion in Trump v. The first order, issued on January 27, , imposed a day ban on the entry into the United States of citizens from seven overwhelmingly Muslim countries — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen — and put a day hold on the admission of refugees, although it contained an exception for refugees who were religious minorities in their home countries.
After the lower federal courts blocked the Trump administration from enforcing the January order, Trump replaced that order with a new and similar although not identical order in March That order also imposed a day ban on the entry of citizens from six of the seven Muslim-majority countries included in the first order removing Iraq from the list and suspended the entry of refugees, this time without any exceptions for religious minorities. When lower courts barred the federal government from enforcing that order as well, the Trump administration went to the Supreme Court, which agreed in June to weigh in and allowed the government to implement part of the ban until the court could rule on the dispute.
From the moment I first laid eyes on the “door to nowhere” that had been installed during the building of our house, years prior to our ownership, my mind began brimming with ideas for the “perfect deck” in the “perfect” location.
The principle method of operation may predate the Mastercrafters Fantasy clock. There are three pieces of glass. The front piece has the numerals. The rear plate has a hole in the center with a pin that supports the center glass and the hand assembly. The center glass moves imperceptibly slowly to advance the hands and is driven through a roller arm and motor in the base.
The finish is nickel. There is a light in the base that illuminates the etched patterns on the glass as well as the edges. There is also an on-off switch in the back for the light. Numerals are at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock and small triangles are at the other hours.

If the employees do not use their accumulated compensatory time, the employer must pay cash compensation under certain circumstances. Fearing the consequences of having to pay for accrued compensatory time, Harris County adopted a policy requiring its employees to schedule time off in order to reduce the amount of accrued time. Petitioners, county deputy sheriffs, sued, claiming that the FLSA does not permit an employer to compel an employee to use compensatory time in the absence of an agreement permitting the employer to do so.
The District Court granted petitioners summary judgment and entered a declaratory judgment that the policy violated the FLSA. The Fifth Circuit reversed, holding that the FLSA did not speak to the issue and thus did not prohibit the county from implementing its policy.
