My review is going to be shorter than my typical Broadway revue. It had a running time of 90 minutes without intermission. The musical tells the story of a modern blind date from beginning to end. A mutual friend has set up a first date meeting at a bar between goodhearted but uptight businessman Aaron Zachary Levi and edgy serial dater Casey Krysta Rodriguez. It is the charm and undeniable chemistry between the two wonderful stars that makes the show absolutely delightful. Five other talented actors make up the entire ensemble. Fun Music, Wonderful Voices The music is enjoyable and several songs were excellent. There is one noticeable clunker in the show… a scene so bad that it stopped the show in a bad way for a few moments. Levi has a tremendous voice, real stage presence, and leading man charisma.

It’s something we’ve all experienced: Two people who don’t know each other making uncomfortable small talk, trying to get to know each other, just because someone felt they might be a good fit. They say that the best art comes from the simplest places. The new Broadway musical First Date takes the audience on one of these blind dates, giving us a hysterical look at romance in the age of Google search and other social mores.
Aaron is an uptight business exec who is still smarting from an extremely bad breakup of a long-term relationship. Casey is a serial first dater who has become so jaded to being set up with the wrong guy that she tends to go in assuming it won’t work out, therefore she may as well have a little fun toying with the dude.

Of course, by this I mean, who does? Does any of the following sound familiar? An instant lack of rapport; a growing aversion as the minutes pass; a mysterious sense that time has suddenly stopped; a desperate hope that the apocalypse will arrive, preferably right this minute. Yet he has, apparently and none too plausibly, never before been on a blind date. Aaron is also a recognizable type: Groaningly obvious, too, is the antagonism that animates their getting-to-know-you banter, which is set to the mechanical rhythms of formulaic television comedies about single guys and gals on the loose and looking for love in the city.
Aaron is haunted by memories of his emasculating ex Kate Loprest and upbraided by his best buddy Bryce Ryness whenever he makes a rookie mistake, like bringing up the emasculating ex. But then the Gay Best Friend comes back a second time, and a third, singing reprises of the same damn song, and your nerves start to fray. Mine were in tatters long before he came flouncing onstage for the last time, having been shredded by the comic banality of most of the material.

Amid the tension on the stage, you can’t help but recall your own worst first romantic encounters. Yet, thanks to such a hilarious script courtesy of Austin Winsberg, and powerfully charming music and lyrics from Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, there is a strong sense that this couple will escape without permanent bruising. Zachary Levi and Krysta Rodriguez are thrust into the uncomfortable central roles, forced to endure awkward pauses, second-guessing, and frequent visits from familiar people inside of their imaginations.
Aug 02, · Rodriguez tells the story because romantic missteps are on her mind these days: The Broadway and “Smash” veteran is starring in a new musical about a blind date opposite Zachary Levi.
This Thanksgiving I had the pleasure of traveling to New York for the first time to spend it with family over the Holiday — and although I would only be there for a few days we were determined to cram as much into those couple days as we could. So this could have been a disaster no matter how well it was done. We had braved the wind and the rain all day wednesday visiting the Met, Times Square and 30 Rock.
We made our way on foot over to Times Square before the performance at 7pm. The show was at the Longacre Theater which from what we read was cursed — or at least thought to be. Its a small theater just off Times Square and we all crammed into the front waiting room trying to get out of the cold. Doors opened about 30 minutes before the show giving us time to climb to the balcony. We were glad Zachary was going to be there for the show versus a fill in — I thought he might be traveling for turkey day.
It starts right off with some singing and I thought it was going to be a long night or set changes, costume changes and so on. It works to make the whole show upbeat and moving at a fast pace. None of the songs are long drawn out numbers just enough to keep a smile on your face and induce a few laughs. The show as a whole is well done and they do a lot with a small set an you really feel like your there watching a first date between the two of them.
Zach gets a pickle stuck in his mouth during one of the numbers which was funny on its own.

But I read it, and I immediately was completely charmed. How did you land that? I had been living in L. The thing that I think is unique about it is someone who wrote for television and film, Austin Winsberg, writes the story. This is his first time writing a musical, but it really reads like a sitcom or like a movie. Was it a fit right away? The character just really resonated with me, and I thought this was definitely something that I could do and really enjoy sinking my teeth into.
So, I auditioned for it and then I had to go back in the next day and read with the other guys. And then the next morning I got the offer. More than responsibility it feels like an opportunity, especially for me because [previously] either I originated a role or I understudied every role in the show.
